What Nationality Are You?

I have a hard time with this question. I mean, I was born in Australia, I grew up here, I’ve never been to any other country, so I’m Australian, right? Well, technically yes, I suppose. But, my parents are English, my 4 grandparents are English (only 2 remain). All my aunts and uncles are English. And to be honest, I identify with Britain and British culture much more so than I do with my Australianness.

So, am I British or Australian. I know that my parents would call themselves Australian by now. My grandparents I’m not so sure about, they still have thick British accents.

I love Australia, don’t get me wrong, but I ‘feel’ like an English person for some reason. Kind of like how New Yorkers who have Italian heritage call themselves Italian, or Irish Americans call themselves Irish, that kind of thing.

And one other thing. I don’t have the typical Aussie accent that you’ve all heard endlessly. I have a bit of a strange accent, it sound a little like a southern English accent with tiny tinges of Australianness in there. I don’t speak in a dumb nasally voice like most people think when they think of an Aussie accent. I don’t know why I talk like an Australian theatre actor from the 1930’s who’s trying to adopt the poshest English accent they can, but I do. Cup of tea, mylady?

What country are you from, or from but not from?

  1. I am half maltese, quarter Irish and quarter Scottish and live in England, and call myself British, but I am proud of my heritage and so can identfiy with all parts of my cultural heritage

  2. I’m about as English as you can get and still be born in America. Pretty homogenous, actually.

My son at least has German/Austrian off his father’s side.
