John Oliver Explains English Soccer To David Letterman

Give this YouTube clip a look, it makes me happy, not only because John Oliver explains British football wonderfully, but also because I was once a Conference League player, and I laughed heartily!

  1. I’m here to answer any questions you may have…about the intricacies of English Soccer.

    • “Soccer? What’s the point!?” – – Any American (except you and a few enlightened ones)

      • I get it since I´m Spanish, though I did live there for quite a long time as a kid.

      • Oh they love it in Spain! One nice thing I heard, is that Real Madrid actually paid quite a lot of money to a lower league Spanish team they were playing in the Copa Del Ray, because that team was struggling through the horrible economy in Spain. Nice guys, Madrid.

      • They´re my team. Soccer is what people live for really, is the escape from a hectic week of back breaking job, that is if you have a job since our economy is so screwed up that finding a job is almost like finding a miracle.
But you can always start a conversation in some bar while you take your coffe or your drink of choice by saying something about soccer and about the Saturday or Sunday game. And spend there hours and hours both thinking you´re a damn good strategist and that you should be the one training the team.

      • Damn, that sounds like heaven to me! Here in Australia, soccer isn’t really talked about in bars, it’s all Rugby and Australian Rules Football and Cricket, and all that shit!
        I’m moving to Spain!

      • You´re most welcome, I have no clue about Rugby by the way. I just see big burly guys hitting each other.

      • Rugby is bullshit!
Rugby has none of the creativity and tension that football has.
Stay away from Rugby, tis shite! lol 😉

      • The few times I´ve watched it I´ve never found it entertaining, nothing like good old soccer.

      • It’s just big men banging into each other.
Put it this way; Lionel Messi, arguably the best player ever, is just a 5 foot 6 inch imp, yet he’s still considered the best ever!
Soccer is the most inclusive sport ever, literally any body type can play and become great if the want to!
I’ll say it again; Rugby (and NFL) is a quick, 3 minute pop song, whereas soccer is the greatest kind of improvised Jazz!
The two aren’t comparable at all!

      • 3 minute pop son, whereas soccer is the greatest kind of improvised jazz you said…..like´d that metaphore

  3. I just love John Oliver 😀

    • He’s brilliant!
If you like him, check out David Mitchell (on a show called ‘Would I Lie To You’ on Youtube) – funniest show ever made!
or Richard Ayoade (also on YouTube)
Both these gentlemen were writing and performing with John Oliver back in the mid-90s at Cambridge University in England. That place produces the greatest comedic minds!
I really cannot recommend ‘Would I Lie To You’ enough! It’s genuinely the fucking funniest thing ever put on TV! Watch it, now!

      • Will check it out! I didn’t know he was associated with those two, love them too! 🙂

(yeah, I’m a huge Anglophile, living in the wrong country 😀 )

      • Yeah, I’m totally jaded when it comes to comedy, I don’t laugh easily at comedy shows, but ‘Would I Lie To You’ still makes me actually roll with laughter, it’s that good!
