This guy is called David Luiz. He’s a football player for Brazil, and at club level, Paris Saint Germain. I used to think that David Luiz was quite a good defender. Not anymore! Now, I know that players are allowed to have off-days every now and again. But, David Luiz’s “performance” against Germany in the semi-final of the World Cup, was actually worse than watching my mum trying to put up a five-man tent inside her tiny, cramped laundry……it wasn’t as funny, but definitely as awfully depressing!
The thing is….David Luiz is not a natural defender, he lacks the ability to read the game, he’s not that great at tackling, and worst of all, he just CANNOT stay in position. He charges up the field as if he thinks he’s a midfielder or striker. He can score the odd sensational free-kick, but that’s about it!
Most of Germany’s SEVEN goals against Brazil were Luiz’s fault. He was either too far up field, leaving a German free in the dangerous area, or he completely lost the German he was supposed to be marking! Very odd defensive behaviour from a player that Paris Saint Germain has just spent 90 million dollars on! AAAARRRRGGGGHHHH. Why you no buy me PSG? I haven’t played competitively in years, but I’m still better than David Luiz!
How should a player defend in a very important World Cup game? Well, like Franco Baresi! Franco Baresi captained Italy to the World Cup final in 1994 in the USA (the most popular World Cup ever for all you American hater out there). By the time the final match came along, Baresi was only just able to run, due to his knee surgery just a few weeks earlier. Yet in the final match against Brazil no less, managed to stop EVERY single one of the Brazilians attacks, most of them single handedley.
David Luiz! Listen up! If you want to defend like a monster, go home and watch video footage of Baresi defending like his life depended on it in the World Cup final with a semi-broken knee!
