Just to get the ball rolling on this rant/review; Frankie Boyle is a brilliant Scottish stand-up comedian. He has one of the finest surreal minds in the business. He is hugely popular in the United Kingdom, Australia, Ireland, but not so much in the U.S.A…..your loss, U.S.Alians.
He has garnered a huge amount of controversy over the past several years for telling some jokes that were unanimously deemed by the mainstream news media to be “too offensive” for T.V. audiences.
The BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) has a love-hate relationship with him. They don’t like his jokes very much, but he is very popular and brings in good ratings. So, the grand old BBC has found itself in a bit of a dilemma. Just remember, this is the same institution that let Monty Python, The Goon Show and countless other strange, possibly “offensive” comedy run riot on the airwaves, to great, as I’m sure I don’t need to tell you, acclaim.
If I recall correctly, Frankie Boyle once told a joke about the Queen’s vagina being haunted because it’s so old (not his best joke, don’t worry). The BBC was OUTRAGED. But what did they do to try to quash this outrageous joke? They told the joke over and over again on various news programmes, as if to say to people, “aren’t you all as outraged as we are about this. Oh, what’s that, you’re not? Well you should be! We’ve told this joke 20 times this evening for god’s sake, it’s disgusting”!
So, if you’re offended by a person’s jokes, it’s not the comedians fault. Offense cannot be given, only taken. Jokes aren’t positions on things, they’re propositions. Jokes are basically a way of saying “wouldn’t be funny if this crazy thing happened”? “Wouldn’t you laugh if this taboo thing happened in funny circumstances”?
So, the next time you see a comedian telling jokes that you don’t like – simply change the channel. Don’t write a letter of complaint to the T.V. station, don’t write an angry piece in a newspaper, just relax!
To nail this into your head, or the heads of overly P.C. people you know and work/live with; if you find yourself not enjoying a particular bit of comedy on the tele, then stop watching that particular bit of comedy, it’s that simple. You don’t have the right not to be offended. End of!
